If you are not familiar with this program, NCP stands for National Consumer Panel and is a service provided by a joint venture between the Nielsen company and SymphonyIRI Group where members – like me – scan the barcodes on all their purchases with a special barcode reader and submit the info through the home computer once per week. The information is calculated by NCP and in return for scanning services, points are awarded which can then be redeemed for prizes (the fun part).

Membership in the program is available through online registration at the NCP website. Acceptance into the program is based on household demographics and the current needs of the company. I joined months back and forgot about it until a couple of weeks ago when I was asked by email to participate in a survey to see if I was still interested in the program. Then, just a few days ago, notification that the scanner was shipped and on it’s way.

This program is completely voluntary. I have no problem sharing my shopping data and the online rewards gift catalog (where points get redeemed) looks pretty impressive, so I’m looking forward to making this work to it’s full potential.
